Speakeasy Basement Bar in East Cobb

Speakeasy Basement Bar in East Cobb

Recently we wrapped up a fantastic basement East Cobb’s Bishop’s Green Neighborhood. Initially, it was a conventional basement you see in many Marietta homes. However, Atlanta Curb Appeal changed it into a cozy speakeasy full of antiques, using recycled and reclaimed materials. It was not the first project for this creative homeowner. Last year, Atlanta Curb Appeal renovated his kitchen and master bathroom. For this project, the client consulted with designer Becky van der Maten. Her creative insight with ideas, colors, and interior décor layout was amazingly helpful in the process.

Coming down the new staircase, the first thing one sees is the show-stopping steampunk balustrade. Using scrap metal collected from garage sales and flea markets over several years, the dark metal pieces now resemble a deconstructed industrial work of art. Honestly, Avi and Andy worked together from beginning to end to make the machinery inspired stairwell a reality.

Second up on the list was a new wine cellar. Beautifully installed shiplapped walls and ceiling created the perfect space to store wine. The clients are budding wine aficionados and as such decided an investment of a small unique cellar would add value to their home. Reclaimed wood for the walls was sourced from an old dismantled barn in Tennessee. The wood color is entirely organic; the only thing Atlanta Curb Appeal had to do was to clean it!

Renovating the basement bathroom was next on the schedule. Floors, shower and fixtures were to be replaced. Also inside the bathroom is a closet that needed some help. The entrance to it was replaced with custom reclaimed wood doors. Then came the big decision; which tile style would work in a space like this? Becky gave them half a dozen options with a unique mix and match of patterns. They decided on a white subway to go with the flower patterned tile wall and a black herringbone floors. Together with the new black industrialized plumbing and features the bathroom is complete.

The newly customized wet bar was next on the schedule. In the original house, the owners had installed a bar, so the plumbing was already there. The only work Atlanta Curb Appeal had to do was to reconfigure the understairs framing to allow for a more significant bar. The crews are very experienced with moving walls and rerouting HVAC ducts and electrical wiring to increase space. The expanded back wall is covered with the new trending corkboard wallpaper. It brings an exciting dynamic to the bar. In keeping with the theme from the wine cellar, the new bar cabinetry was custom made using the reclaimed barn wood.

The new floors installed are gorgeous, old rustic white oak planks with lots of character. The only addition was a moisture barrier and a ¾” plywood layer subfloor over the original concrete. After the floors were installed, a light buffing and a stain brought out the natural glow. For extra protection and longevity, a poly coat was added. The windows and door trim were also replaced to keep everything custom, including the baseboards.

Atlanta Curb Appeal is a boutique contractor and as such is always ready to help out with custom touches. Rustic farmhouse chandeliers were made entirely from scratch using raw materials, including a recycled mantle. The electrical parts used were ordered online. The new lighting is a conversation starter in this speakeasy basement bar. Also added were new charming cedar beams along the ceiling. It does not feel like a typical basement anymore with these custom touches!

Ssshhhhh, the absolute coolest part of this prohibition styled basement renovation is the secret door with shelving in the mechanical room! Sure to be a favorite for adults and children in the years to come.

The clients are getting fabulous feedback about the new basement. It’s perfect for entertainment when friends come over!

Basement Remodeling To Discuss Before You Start

Basement Finishing East Cobb, GA

Basement remodeling has been quite popular these past few years for our clients at Atlanta Curb Appeal. Typically during our free estimate process we sit down and examine the space and limitations; then outline a plan for turning the clients dream of a finished basement into reality

Here is some of the ground we cover during that initial meeting.

Expectations

What is a realistic expectation of the space? Will it be a family common room? Will it house an entertainment area, i.e. flat screens or wet-bar or both? Will it be a playroom that will eventually turn into study areas in future years? Do you need more office square footage to keep your life organized?

Basement Kitchen Marietta

Bar in Basement

If you are thinking this could be the perfect spare bedroom or mom in law suite, consider height of steps, bathroom access (a shower installation vs a bathtub), height of countertops and accessibility as range of motion decreases. Unlike main floor spaces, basements do take extra steps and that should be considered.

Exercise rooms are another great idea to fill the space. If getting to the gym can be a problem, bringing it to you maybe the solution!

Lighting

If natural lighting is at a premium consider how to draw it out or reflect it. If this lighting is lacking then spend the resources on a great lighting system that makes the space feel welcoming.

Basement Flooring

Sealing

If your basement has had moisture issues in the past, preventative sealing should be explored and completed prior to any work.

Flooring

If your basement has had leaking in the past, it would be best to avoid wood flooring, which can buckle at the first hint of moisture. Areas in the deepest interiors can be better suited with replaceable tile and carpet. A few years ago we finished this basement floor (see below picture) with a concrete sealer. It was magnificent and we received so many compliments on it.

Walls

Adding walls or moving walls is an option too. Main supports can be moved if necessary.

From Small and Tight to Light and Bright-Home Remodel East Cobb

East Cobb Home Interior Renovation

East Cobb Kitchen Remodel

Where was this project and how did they find you?
East Cobb, Georgia. They found us on a private East Cobb mothers group Facebook page.

KitchenRenovationEastCobb

What was their kitchen like before?
The kitchen was completely different; it was small and tight with a totally different layout.

Share about the kitchen remodeling process.
First we gutted it, then took off the stamped ceilings and did a lot of re-wiring for the can lighting. We then installed new smooth ceiling drywall. We also took down the whole wall between the dining room and the kitchen and relocated all the AC vents and returns. In this process we had to do a lot of relocating of electrical outlets and switches too. The gas line for the gas range had to be moved as well. Above the stove we cut into the exterior brick for hood venting. The client picked out all the cabinets and faucets.

Tell us about the new lighting in the kitchen.
Can lighting is becoming more fashionable and we have been installing more of these flushed lighting systems each year. These new lighting kits are energy efficient LED lighting. Can lighting keeps the ceiling nice, clean and smooth white.

Would you say that kitchen islands are becoming common these days?
People love kitchen islands. For many homes the kitchen is the new center of entertainment.

After Picture East Cobb Remodel

What else did you do to the home?
We did the whole main level of the house and half of the basement. We widened four sections of the house to create a modern open floor plan with wide openings between each area. One of the main areas we exposed was between the stairs going up the bedrooms and down into the basement. We added a railing for safety. Finished the basement with drywall and new carpet. While we were down there we added a bathroom, air conditioning and painted the interior too.

After:

IMG_1198IMG_1197

What was the hardest part of the project?
The floors were installed during the most humid days of the year and we had to wait longer for the polyurethane to dry between each coat; which slowed us down. The owner was about to give birth to her 3rd child and we had to beat the schedule!

What has the customer said about the project?
They are very happy with the end result and have already recommended us to others!

IMG_1274

What did they say about their experience with Atlanta Curb Appeal? What is their favorite part?
Basically they shared, “it was a pleasure to work with Avi the owner because of his amazing level of communication and calm spirit, even through the hard parts of the project.’

They loved the way everything is now open and the new flow of their house. It’s amazing how much tranquility a renovated home can bring to the family dynamic. The kids adore the new basement playroom.

Spectacular House Renovation in Roswell

House Renovation in Roswell

How did they find Atlanta Curb Appeal? They hired a designer to help them renovate their house. This designer then brought me on to bid on the project. The client liked what they saw and did some online research about us. After we met, they insisted to only work with Atlanta Curb Appeal.

What were the renovations that they were looking to have done?

1) Take out a wall between the kitchen and dining room and install a metal beam to support the new wide opening.

2) Demolition of the entire kitchen and installation of new cabinets and new appliances.

IMG_2766

3) Demolish all of the old glued down floors and install new wide panel red oak hardwood floors and then stain them.

4) Custom build a barn door using beautiful reclaimed wood from her grandfather’s farm and also build a fireplace mantel with this same gorgeous wood.

6) Upgrade bathrooms with new tile and vanities.

7) Resurface the brick fireplace with stone.

8) Install cedar ceiling beams and columns.

9) Replace all lights and switches in the house so they could connect to the “smart home” computerized control system created by Media Nexus.

IMG_2763

10) Install surround sound system

11) Replaced carpet on stairs and handrail with oak wood to match the new floors.

What prompted the whole house renovation? They purchased this home and it needed a lot of work to get up to their standards

What was the biggest change that the clients have kept coming back to as their “favorite improvement”?

Knocking down the wall in the kitchen. It created an open kitchen floor plan so that the island became part of the dining area. Now there is a natural flow in the house. This opening also naturally expanded the size of the kitchen.

Which room or section was the biggest challenge?

IMG_2771

Removing they old floors! They were glued down. It was very time consuming, it literally took an extra day of demolition for 5 guys to tear all small wood pieces off the subfloor.

Which part was your personal favorite? I personally always like the creative part of a project no matter what size it is. But if I had to pick I would say, working on the true reclaimed wood on the barn doors and the fireplace mantel was a pleasure. Jose, my carpenter for the last 4 years, has over 30 years of experience with wood and he loves working on unique wood pieces like these. He is also well equipped with about every tool you can imagine that could be used on wood.

IMG_2791

Did they make any modern or trendy decisions?

The client works for an electrical supply company so he had all the latest and greatest technology upgrades.

Tell us more about media system that was installed as well as the electricity updates.

We partnered with Media Nexus, a local home systems technology company. They integrated the audio/visual technology, lighting and other systems into a smart home that is operated with a single button click, creating a unique user experience for the owners. It is simply amazing.

Tell me about color schemes, did they decide or did you help guide them? They used the designer for colors and fixtures decisions. It looks wonderful.

How long did this enormous project take to finish?

IMG_2788

The project was completed over a 5 week period. Remarkable, given the scope of work.

Did they love the results? Yes, they have already hired us again to demolish the back yard deck and rebuild the new deck, covered porch and railing system!

Gorgeous Basement Finishing

Check out this interview with owner Avi Moyal, about one of our recent Basement Finishing remodeling jobs we did in East Cobb/Marietta, GA.

Q. What was the basement like before?

A. It was half finished in the 80’s with just carpets, basic cabinets and paneling. The wood walls made it feel very dark down there. Our goal was to lighten up the area and make it more inviting for entertaining and relaxation.

Q. What were some problems that needed to be addressed?

A. Basement plumbing and electrical re-routing, a huge metal post in the middle of the space. Also there were ceiling vents and pipes which needed to be covered. As in most basements the house cables, vents and pipes were located under the main floors of the home which caused all kind of problems/adventures.

Q. What were some of the unusual details that you guys just love about this place?

A. We did a special staining process on the floors. We stained the concrete with 2 coats of clear epoxy. This unusual technique gave an unique look to the floors and the overall space. It’s beautiful and almost looks like copper.

Also we love the artistic touches such as the hand burned plywood squares on the lower ceiling bridge and the fiercely unique 6×6 sliced log wood puzzle design within the counter top. It was fun to help pick out new lights fixtures and bar chairs for the new space. We added handmade heavy carpets which helped break up the cold floors.

Q. What are some things homeowners should be aware of when taking on a basement remodeling project?

A. That it takes time and it is never what you expect until you start breaking down walls and moving stuff around to only discover that you have to invest more )-; Basement finishing is usually more complicated than people think, mostly because the challenges basements present after you start. Because if you think about it, you are creating something different than what it was originally designed for. However it is totally worth it in the end because of increased living and entertaining square footage.

Q. What are some things that people say when they see your new basement?

A. WOW! they are absolutely loving it. I think the combination of colors and the small touches of craftsmanship has made it very unique. We have already had our daughter’s 7 years old birthday party down there as well as an adults party and other gatherings in the new basement space…We are very pleased with the results and the fact that we are actually getting good use out of this investment to our home.
