Atlanta Curb Appeal Gives Back: Anna Crawford Center Holiday Build

IMG_0647

Recently Atlanta Curb Appeal was able to give back to the East Cobb and North Georgia community by participating in a special way, by helping the Anna Crawford Center of Cherokee County. They put on an annual light display called, “Holiday Lights of Hope.” Over 25,000 people attended last year.

The Anna Crawford Center is a nonprofit, community-based organization that works to break the cycle of child abuse through prevention and intervention services. It is an amazing foundation and Atlanta Curb Appeal was glad to volunteer our services.

How did you connect with Holiday Lights of Hope?
We are the second largest client of the East Cobb Home Depot store. We have a long and healthy relationship with the employees and the managers at that location.

IMG_0660

Who participated in the build?
Andy, Rudi Anderson and myself [Avi Moyal] were there that day.

IMG_0658

How did Atlanta Curb Appeal help?
They asked us to help with the roof and structure build out. The Anna Crawford Center and their suppliers provided everything else.

IMG_0655 IMG_0656 IMG_0651
How long did it take?
We were there from Friday morning until dark. We worked hard, but we enjoyed ourselves immensely as you can see by the pictures!

IMG_0652

How did it make you feel to participate in such a project?
We were thrilled to be invited to help this important cause. Of course; we accepted, and I immediately blocked the date for Andy and me in the calendar. Honestly, even though we are very busy right now before the holidays, we felt in our hearts that it is much more important to help others including our bigger supplier, Home Depot.

IMG_0661
Are there plans to participate in more projects like these going forward?
The Home Depot of East Cobb is a very well organized store with an amazing team. Ryan Leblanc, the store manager, is an outstanding manager that assists us greatly with most of our supplies and deliveries. Their store handles many ‘volunteer with friends’ activities. If we get invited again, we will happily join in!

We Got to Be Their Remodeling Hero!

How Did Your Client Find You?

It is the strangest story! Her renovation contractor didn’t show up on Day 1 of her renovations. She quickly got on an East Cobb Mom’s Facebook group and asked for advice on what to do. Atlanta Curb Appeal was recommended. We met her in a day, agreed to a plan of action and we had our crew start work the next morning. Our client said that it was quite a whirlwind. She was thrilled that within 14 days, her home renovations including bathroom remodeling were completed!

Was it a small project since it only took two weeks?

Not at all. That’s what makes her story so amazing. Here is what she got in just two weeks:

  • New kitchen renovation with new cabinets and countertops
  • New bamboo hardwoods
  • New master bathroom remodel
  • New powder room remodel
  • New electrical work
  • New plumbing work
  • New recessed lighting
  • Interior paint on walls and trim throughout the whole house
  • New carpet upstairs

What are the benefits to having Bamboo Hardwoods?

Bamboo flooring is known for its strength, durability, it’s eco-friendliness and natural resistance to insects and moisture.

BambooFlooringAtlantaCurbAppeal

Are they more costly?

Bamboo hardwoods are not much more expensive. It is not popular with homeowners yet, but its interest is growing. One caveat is that it should only be used in areas where there is not excessive moisture. That can damage it.

Tell us about the Master Bathroom Remodel.

The master bathroom turned out beautifully. It was complete makeover! Everything was demolished during the demolition phase and built from the ground up.

We put in new bathroom floor tile with coordinating wall tile around the shower and tub. Then Atlanta Curb Appeal installed frameless glass shower doors, which are very popular. The client chose white shaker style vanities and lighting throughout. The new lighting required a fair bit of electrical work. We then finished off the bathroom remodel with mirrors, towel bars, new paint, and baseboards. It is truly a brand new space. You wouldn’t recognize it from the before pictures!

BathroomNewTileAfterAtlantaCurbAppeal

Why did they want to update their home, did they have problems with the layout?

No technical problems existed; they were just ready to upgrade the look of the original house.

Are they happy with their finished home?

Absolutely! They sent us a thank you note (see below) and have already referred us 3 new clients! We are so happy that we could make their dreams come true on time.

Here is just one of the testimonials they sent us.

Good evening Avi and Andy,

We just wanted to touch base with you and let you know how much we appreciate all of the hard work you have been putting into our house. Sometimes it’s easier to gripe on the bad not knowledge all of the good. We hope you know how much we love all of the wonderful things you have done for us and our home. Although this has been challenging at times, you have made this experience a very bearable endeavor. This journey would definitely not have been possible without the two of you. Your guidance and expertise are one in a million. You have said from the beginning to buckle up, so thank you for taking us on this journey called home renovations. You are making our dreams a reality by turning our house into our home. So from the bottom of our hearts thank you!!!

All our love,

Ashley and Johnathon

Stunning! Modern Kitchen Remodel That Will Blow Your Mind!!

Stunning! Modern Kitchen Remodel That Will Blow Your Mind!!

This month we discuss a project with Avi Moyal, owner of Atlanta Curb Appeal, a total kitchen remodel recently completed in East Cobb.

What made the client decide to get the kitchen renovated?

The couple had recently purchased a home. Before they even moved in they knew that they were going to have to make some major changes. The house was very traditional and had not been updated since the 1980’s. The client’s personal style was very distinctive, very modern.

IMG_0434 (1)

BEFORE KITCHEN RENOVATION

After talking with them we realized their vision was leaning towards a more open floor plan to achieve an ultra modern feel. It would need clean lines with light colors in the background. Doing this would allow the contemporary features to stand out. The brightening would also showcase the client’s personal collection of artifacts.

What was the process like? Was it difficult since it was so dramatic?

Yes! The demolition phase was long and messy. This was followed by the reconstruction stage, which included adding support beams. Since there was so much new fabrication, we had to add new electrical and HVAC ductwork. Even the plumbing was changed out and re-routed. This is typical when you move walls.

IMG_0438

BEFORE KITCHEN

IMG_0433 (1)

BEFORE DINING ROOM

How does the kitchen flow differently now?

It is so smooth now because the dining and kitchen walls were actually knocked out completely. The foyer hallway passageway was then widened. Plus the openings from the kitchen area to the living area and back room were changed too. All the railing in the house was replaced too. Gorgeous new hardwoods were also installed. The last part of the puzzle was all new paint.

HardwoodsInstallationKitchenEastCobbKitchenRemodelEastCobb

What are the new features that impress guests or neighbors when they see it?

In the kitchen it is the new custom made cabinets that were cut by a CNC machine and hand-made by a European cabinetmaker. The all new appliances (Viking, etc) and gorgeous granite that was leather finished is a total jaw-dropper.

KitchenEastCobbRemodelWallRemoved

Another favorite is the renovated fireplace; it was a completely made over with true marble, tile to floor and a new custom mantle.

CustomMadeMantleAtlantaCurbAppeal

How long did all of this take?

The whole project from start to finish was two months with intensive daily work from a few crews in parallel.

What should clients expect when they tackle such a huge kitchen remodel?

Plumbing and electrical changes can be a challenge especially when you move walls and the location of the appliances.

How do the clients feel with their new kitchen?

The clients are super happy with the end results! Especially since it was all done so quickly, on budget and with such a fine high quality finish.

Wait Don’t Start Your Basement Until You Read This….

Basement Remodeling To Discuss Before You Start

Basement Finishing East Cobb, GA

Basement remodeling has been quite popular these past few years for our clients at Atlanta Curb Appeal. Typically during our free estimate process we sit down and examine the space and limitations; then outline a plan for turning the clients dream of a finished basement into reality

Here is some of the ground we cover during that initial meeting.

Expectations

What is a realistic expectation of the space? Will it be a family common room? Will it house an entertainment area, i.e. flat screens or wet-bar or both? Will it be a playroom that will eventually turn into study areas in future years? Do you need more office square footage to keep your life organized?

Basement Kitchen Marietta

Bar in Basement

If you are thinking this could be the perfect spare bedroom or mom in law suite, consider height of steps, bathroom access (a shower installation vs a bathtub), height of countertops and accessibility as range of motion decreases. Unlike main floor spaces, basements do take extra steps and that should be considered.

photo 2 (5)

Exercise rooms are another great idea to fill the space. If getting to the gym can be a problem, bringing it to you maybe the solution!

Lighting

If natural lighting is at a premium consider how to draw it out or reflect it. If this lighting is lacking then spend the resources on a great lighting system that makes the space feel welcoming.

Basement Flooring

Sealing

If your basement has had moisture issues in the past, preventative sealing should be explored and completed prior to any work.

Flooring

If your basement has had leaking in the past, it would be best to avoid wood flooring, which can buckle at the first hint of moisture. Areas in the deepest interiors can be better suited with replaceable tile and carpet. A few years ago we finished this basement floor (see below picture) with a concrete sealer. It was magnificent and we received so many compliments on it.

photo 2-1

Walls

Adding walls or moving walls is an option too. Main supports can be moved if necessary.

From Small and Tight to Light and Bright-Home Remodel East Cobb

East Cobb Home Interior Renovation

East Cobb Kitchen Remodel

Where was this project and how did they find you?
East Cobb, Georgia. They found us on a private East Cobb mothers group Facebook page.

KitchenRenovationEastCobb

What was their kitchen like before?
The kitchen was completely different; it was small and tight with a totally different layout.

Share about the kitchen remodeling process.
First we gutted it, then took off the stamped ceilings and did a lot of re-wiring for the can lighting. We then installed new smooth ceiling drywall. We also took down the whole wall between the dining room and the kitchen and relocated all the AC vents and returns. In this process we had to do a lot of relocating of electrical outlets and switches too. The gas line for the gas range had to be moved as well. Above the stove we cut into the exterior brick for hood venting. The client picked out all the cabinets and faucets.

Gutted Demolition Kitchen East Cobb Kitchen Renovation Before

Tell us about the new lighting in the kitchen.
Can lighting is becoming more fashionable and we have been installing more of these flushed lighting systems each year. These new lighting kits are energy efficient LED lighting. Can lighting keeps the ceiling nice, clean and smooth white.

IMG_0963

Would you say that kitchen islands are becoming common these days?
People love kitchen islands. For many homes the kitchen is the new center of entertainment.

After Picture East Cobb Remodel

What else did you do to the home?
We did the whole main level of the house and half of the basement. We widened four sections of the house to create a modern open floor plan with wide openings between each area. One of the main areas we exposed was between the stairs going up the bedrooms and down into the basement. We added a railing for safety. Finished the basement with drywall and new carpet. While we were down there we added a bathroom, air conditioning and painted the interior too.

After:

IMG_1198IMG_1197

What was the hardest part of the project?
The floors were installed during the most humid days of the year and we had to wait longer for the polyurethane to dry between each coat; which slowed us down. The owner was about to give birth to her 3rd child and we had to beat the schedule!

What has the customer said about the project?
They are very happy with the end result and have already recommended us to others!

IMG_1274

What did they say about their experience with Atlanta Curb Appeal? What is their favorite part?
Basically they shared, “it was a pleasure to work with Avi the owner because of his amazing level of communication and calm spirit, even through the hard parts of the project.’

They loved the way everything is now open and the new flow of their house. It’s amazing how much tranquility a renovated home can bring to the family dynamic. The kids adore the new basement playroom.

How did they find you?

Owners found me on East Cobb Moms Facebook Page.

What did the customer think of working with Atlanta Curb Appeal?

We clicked right away and we started the work as soon as they purchased the house. This Atlanta Country Club whole home renovation took about 4 weeks. The client is overjoyed and pleased with the end results.

How did they decide on the colors for the kitchen and living room?

The owner choose the colors themselves with a little help from us. We pained the Kitchen Walls, Sherwin Williams “Agreeable Gray” and the Cabinets a beautiful combination of white and gray, including Sherwin Williams, “Simple White”.

Astonishing Transformation of this East Cobb Home!

750BeforeAfterMakeoverECApril2015

Recently Atlanta Curb Appeal wrapped up another amazing whole house makeover in East Cobb, GA!  Below is an interview with owner Avi Moyal about the details of the project. It’s a great story including a little bit of mystery we hope you will enjoy reading.

How did they find you?

Well this is a very interesting story…

I got a call one day, asking me to come and give a quote for some curb appeal work. As always, I ask my new clients, how did they find me? This lovely lady said she is holding a postcard I had sent her in the mail recently. I was shocked to hear that because the only time I did mass postcard marketing was exactly 3 and half years ago. I had to go and see it with my own eyes, so I got in my car and drove straight to her house. And there it was, the postcard I printed almost 4 years ago was there in her hand! No idea how that happened. A mystery maybe the USPS can solve for me!

Why did they select Atlanta Curb Appeal? Did they get other quotes?
The client got 3 quotes, one was a little lower than ours but she did not feel that he could deliver. The second quote was considerably higher than mine. She went with ours because she liked the design ideas I proposed.

A few years ago she had the front landing and stairs done and she didn’t like how it turned out at all. So we came up with a new design that included demolishing the existing one and building it from scratch, which we then covered with a beautiful natural stone all the way to the driveway.

What projects did you complete in the home?
Refinish the hardwood floors
Replace the front door
Fix the rotted cedar siding
Demolition the front porch and rebuild new rounded stairs and cover with natural stone.
Build a portico
Dramatic exterior change using new paint palette
Paint the deck and railing
Replaced all exterior lights
New custom made shutters

Why did they choose to have the hardwood floors refinished?
Actually she hadn’t decided to do it until our initial meeting. They were very scratched, basically due to common wear and tear. During my first assessment, I asked her if she would like to go ahead and refinish them while we were in there doing the renovations. It’s a simple process really since they are solid hardwoods, easily sanded and refinished to any shade one could want.

What caused the rotted cedar siding? Was this instance typical of homes of this age? Or was it due to a manufacturer problem?
Some decay is normal, part of the aging of the natural cedar siding. Overall though, the siding was in decent condition. Merely a few critical places needed to be removed and replaced.

IMG_3202

Why did they want to add a portico? What was their inspiration?
We went over a few designs however they really liked the portico that is featured on our homepage. Actually the whole color scheme of the exterior of that house was really appealing to them so we went with the same color formulas. Gray with white and black accent and trim colors.

SubstandardFullSizeRender

Was gray in color in mind from the start?
She had gray in mind from the start but not the actual shade of it. All the colors were discussed together and the red door was her special request.

Why was the front door replaced instead of painted?
The client wanted a new door and sidelites to give a reinvigorated look to the front of the house and to accentuate the attractive new portico.

Deck Painting Atlanta Curb Appeal

Did you have to resurface the deck before painting?
No, it was in good condition, we kept the deck as is, we only pressure-washed and repainted it. Because it had been painted in the past, we couldn’t merely apply a stain over the old deck. The new deck colors were chosen to complement the new exterior, white for the railing and light gray for the floor decking. The results were amazing, way beyond our expectations!! There is such a clean and neat feeling there now.

New Deck Repaint Atlanta Curb Appeal

How many days for each phase of this project?
In a perfect world:
Paint – 1 week
Floors – 3 days
Front stairs – 1 week
Portico – 5 days
but we were there for almost two months because of rainy days.

Artistic Door Numbers

We also installed a new house numbers sign that matched the new look. When we took off the old door, the client wanted to keep these 4 digit metal numbers as a souvenir. I offered to take it home and do something artistic with it.

Did they book the bathroom remodel job after they saw and loved your work or was this always in the original plan?
Yes the bathrooms came much later in the process; we will start them in a couple of more weeks probably.

Are they happy with the finished results?

Customer Review Atlanta Curb Appeal

The day we finished, after I got home that evening, I got a text from them saying ” I like it all so much Avi that I’m crying I’m so happy. I just can’t believe I have a pretty house after 20 years. I wish my mother could see it now. Thank U Avi” (see above).

This filled my heart with joy knowing we made someone that happy with our work.

Spectacular House Renovation in Roswell

House Renovation in Roswell

How did they find Atlanta Curb Appeal? They hired a designer to help them renovate their house. This designer then brought me on to bid on the project. The client liked what they saw and did some online research about us. After we met, they insisted to only work with Atlanta Curb Appeal.

What were the renovations that they were looking to have done?

1) Take out a wall between the kitchen and dining room and install a metal beam to support the new wide opening.

2) Demolition of the entire kitchen and installation of new cabinets and new appliances.

IMG_2766

3) Demolish all of the old glued down floors and install new wide panel red oak hardwood floors and then stain them.

4) Custom build a barn door using beautiful reclaimed wood from her grandfather’s farm and also build a fireplace mantel with this same gorgeous wood.

6) Upgrade bathrooms with new tile and vanities.

7) Resurface the brick fireplace with stone.

8) Install cedar ceiling beams and columns.

9) Replace all lights and switches in the house so they could connect to the “smart home” computerized control system created by Media Nexus.

IMG_2763

10) Install surround sound system

11) Replaced carpet on stairs and handrail with oak wood to match the new floors.

What prompted the whole house renovation? They purchased this home and it needed a lot of work to get up to their standards

What was the biggest change that the clients have kept coming back to as their “favorite improvement”?

Knocking down the wall in the kitchen. It created an open kitchen floor plan so that the island became part of the dining area. Now there is a natural flow in the house. This opening also naturally expanded the size of the kitchen.

Which room or section was the biggest challenge?

IMG_2771

Removing they old floors! They were glued down. It was very time consuming, it literally took an extra day of demolition for 5 guys to tear all small wood pieces off the subfloor.

Which part was your personal favorite? I personally always like the creative part of a project no matter what size it is. But if I had to pick I would say, working on the true reclaimed wood on the barn doors and the fireplace mantel was a pleasure. Jose, my carpenter for the last 4 years, has over 30 years of experience with wood and he loves working on unique wood pieces like these. He is also well equipped with about every tool you can imagine that could be used on wood.

IMG_2791

Did they make any modern or trendy decisions?

The client works for an electrical supply company so he had all the latest and greatest technology upgrades.

Tell us more about media system that was installed as well as the electricity updates.

We partnered with Media Nexus, a local home systems technology company. They integrated the audio/visual technology, lighting and other systems into a smart home that is operated with a single button click, creating a unique user experience for the owners. It is simply amazing.

Tell me about color schemes, did they decide or did you help guide them? They used the designer for colors and fixtures decisions. It looks wonderful.

How long did this enormous project take to finish?

IMG_2788

The project was completed over a 5 week period. Remarkable, given the scope of work.

Did they love the results? Yes, they have already hired us again to demolish the back yard deck and rebuild the new deck, covered porch and railing system!

Exquisite Bathroom Remodel in East Cobb!

Exquisite Bathroom Remodel in East Cobb!

Bathroom Remodel East Cobb GA Atlanta Curb Appeal

This month on the blog we present our latest bathroom remodel project in East Cobb, Georgia we completed recently. We explore the ‘big picture’ and discuss the ‘pros and cons’ of medium sized renovations to a home.

How did they find you?

They found us through a neighbor that we had done work for.

What made them choose Atlanta Curb Appeal?
They had checked quotes from a few contractors and decided to go with us based on recommendations from their neighbor, plus our price and the design solutions I gave them.

Was there a significant amount of demolition? How many days for each stage?
The demolition required two days and the overall project was completed in 2 weeks.

Quad Head Shower Installation

Quad Head Shower Installation

Tell us more about the Quad-Head Shower. Did the customers pick this one? What are the benefits of this type of shower?
The clients selected all the plumbing fixtures themselves. We have been seeing the Quad-Head Showerhead more and more recently. It is much more complicated than standard head installations. There is a whole new system of small pipes that needs to be created above each showerhead. People select these modern showerheads because they are looking for an amazing rainfall shower experience.

East Cobb Bathroom Remodel

Pebbled Floor Close Up

How happy are the clients with the final project?
They are very happy! In fact everyday (after the demolition stage) when they got home from work, they would express their amazement on our daily progress plus the clean meticulous work of our crew.

Who designed shower?
We consulted on the structure and layout of the shower and the client selected the tile. We recommended the location of the bench and soap niche. And how the tile should work best on these walls.

Free Standing Tub

Free Standing Tub Modern Bathroom

What were your favorite parts of their bathroom upgrade?
The shower tile, the fixtures and the stunning free standing tub. The pebbled floor is great too!

What would you like to convey to people who are thinking about a bathroom renovation?  What is the big picture that customers should take into consideration?
Visualization is key. If a client can communicate the final design they are aiming for then we are halfway there. We are also happy to consult to help our clients get the answers to some of these questions:

  • Which walls needs to stay or go?
  • Where do you prefer your new fixtures to be located?
  • What materials do you want included? Do you want a soap niche? How about a custom shower bench?
  • What about special instructions? Do you have a preference on the heights of the faucets or mirrors?

Each step is connected so the sooner we know the design, the better we can prepare for each stage of electrical and plumbing and the placement of the final product. This is critical before we close the walls back up.

Another thing we like clients to keep in mind is that after demolition, things may look different to you and alternative ideas may spring up! Flexibility is important because occasionally you may find out what you wanted to do is not possible after all because of how a joist is running or the way a support structure is lined up internally behind the wall. Everything is possible of course, but sometimes the cost of shifting things around does not make financial sense.

Modern Bathroom Renovation East Cobb GA Atlanta Curb Appeal

Modern Bathroom Remodel East Cobb GA

Modern and complicated plumbing fixtures are beautiful to the eye and can sometimes save money in the long run with their increased efficiency. Yet sometimes they do not come packaged with all the other parts required for installation. Additional costs might be needed to get these fixtures up and running.

Renovating any part of your home is an undertaking and we encourage clients to be patient and to trust the process. Have confidence that everything will be elegant and beautiful in the end! We follow the same containment procedures with each job, which is first to cover the floors and separate areas with sealed nylon and zippered entrances then at the end of each day we clean up after ourselves. Then every new morning we set up covers again. Note, there will be dust in some areas though, areas you are not used to having dust before, but this is simply part of remodeling. We sincerely do our best to keep it as clean as possible at each stage.

We hope we have been able to thoroughly explain the renovation process from the point of view of the homeowner. If you are considering a new bathroom renovation please check out Atlanta Curb Appeal’s numerous detailed online reviews and contact us for a free estimate at 770-778-1172.

What’s Hot for Decks in 2015

Deck Materials and Trends for 2015

What is hot for 2015 when it comes to new decks? In this month’s post we discuss the pros and cons of deck materials for new deck installations.

Wood types

Deck Material Types

Pressure Treated Decking

Pressure Treated wood is the deck material standard; over 75% are built with this material. Pressure treated lumber gets its name from the chemical treatment process. First wood is placed in a pressurized cylinder or chamber, and then a preservative is applied, as the pressure in the chamber increases the solution penetrates the wood on a cellular level. Pressure treated wood is more durable then an untreated wood (which begins to break down with a year of exposure to the elements). Four months or more after installation, we suggest staining your pressure treated decking (the part that is exposed to the sun). The cost for staining is a separate cost but is very important. Staining increases the life span by about 15 years. Unstained decks can last only 7-10 years due to cracking, bending and twisting of the wood. No matter which decking you choose at Atlanta Curb Appeal we use pressure treated wood as the support structure underneath for strength and durability.

Composite Decking

Composite wood decks, a wood plastic composite are great choice for decks. They do not require staining like pressure treated woods and are nearly maintenance free. However they are about three times the cost per board then pressure treated. Composite decking comes in a variety of colors including blends, which have the appearance of exotic hardwoods. Can be also installed with hidden fasteners for a clean and smooth look.

Cedar Decking

Cedar is a beautiful wood for decks; it is the most natural looking wood. Cedar costs about twice as much as pressure treated wood. Cedar can outperform for pressure treated wood in some cases because it does not absorb water like other wood types. It is resistant to rot, mildew and bugs. A benefit of cedar decking is that it can be stained immediately. It is important to resealed every few years.

Brazilian Hardwoods

Brazilian Hardwoods are a gorgeous tropical wood with zero maintenance. It is the most expensive wood on the market and last longer than composite decking, typically 30 years. It resists molds and is not chemically treated.

Railings

All decks that are higher than 36” from the ground, require a railing system. Wood, metal or a wood and metal combination are the good options .

Project Time

The amount of time it typically takes to build a deck is four to six days. However every situation is different give us a call to discuss.

If a new deck is on the agenda for spring give Atlanta Curb Appeal a call at 770-778-1172 for your free estimate.
