Wait Don’t Start Your Basement Until You Read This….

Basement Remodeling To Discuss Before You Start

Basement Finishing East Cobb, GA

Basement remodeling has been quite popular these past few years for our clients at Atlanta Curb Appeal. Typically during our free estimate process we sit down and examine the space and limitations; then outline a plan for turning the clients dream of a finished basement into reality

Here is some of the ground we cover during that initial meeting.

Expectations

What is a realistic expectation of the space? Will it be a family common room? Will it house an entertainment area, i.e. flat screens or wet-bar or both? Will it be a playroom that will eventually turn into study areas in future years? Do you need more office square footage to keep your life organized?

If you are thinking this could be the perfect spare bedroom or mom in law suite, consider height of steps, bathroom access (a shower installation vs a bathtub), height of countertops and accessibility as range of motion decreases. Unlike main floor spaces, basements do take extra steps and that should be considered.

Exercise rooms are another great idea to fill the space. If getting to the gym can be a problem, bringing it to you maybe the solution!

Lighting

If natural lighting is at a premium consider how to draw it out or reflect it. If this lighting is lacking then spend the resources on a great lighting system that makes the space feel welcoming.

Basement Flooring

Sealing

If your basement has had moisture issues in the past, preventative sealing should be explored and completed prior to any work.

Flooring

If your basement has had leaking in the past, it would be best to avoid wood flooring, which can buckle at the first hint of moisture. Areas in the deepest interiors can be better suited with replaceable tile and carpet. A few years ago we finished this basement floor (see below picture) with a concrete sealer. It was magnificent and we received so many compliments on it.

Walls

Adding walls or moving walls is an option too. Main supports can be moved if necessary.
