Outdoor Deck and Backyard Makeover in East Cobb

This month on our blog we are covering a huge exterior project recently completed in East Cobb, GA (Marietta). Here is an interview with Avi Moyal, owner of Atlanta Curb Appeal, about this beautiful backyard metamorphosis.

Pergola East Cobb

How did the clients hear about you?
Last year we had done some work in their East Cobb neighborhood; they had remembered our sign and ended up talking with the owners about their experience with us.

Were you the only company that submitted an estimate?
They actually met with 3 contractors but liked our company the best. They sensed that we were the most knowledgeable and that we would deliver results.

What was the scope of work?
First we performed demolition on the old fence around the back yard. Then we pulled out a minor retaining wall (which was falling apart) in the lower part of the yard and also a long rotting wall in the upper section. After all of this we took down the sick trees and several bushes that were in the way. Following this we executed the demolition of the old deck. Then the new landscaping began. We started with soil grading in all areas and installing a new drainage system. We fixed and upgraded the old sprinklers system and lay down the new pavers area. Then came the build of the new fence.

Phase two was building a new large deck and hot tub plus the pergola above. We laid the steppers stones and steps, put sod and mulch down and completed two long retaining walls made of natural stone. This part took the whole length of the project time which was about 2.5 months. We actually did the shaping stone by stone and the put them into place. Yes, it is sincerely a true work of art and the results speak for themselves.

Tell me about the landscaping improvements in the backyard. Was this an extensive project?
In many areas, there wasn’t any grass. Likewise they did not have plants to support the water and erosion from the weather. Their property is on a slope and had major issues with drainage. We put a new drain system in place and directed all of the gutter water and the gushing water from the neighbors to the creek behind their house. We installed new sod and plants. Strategic planting can help hold soil in its place.

Why did they want a pergola in their backyard?
The pergola idea came later in the project when they decided to add the hot tub. The deck and stairs plan got totally re-designed after the new beautiful retaining natural stones (stone walls, paths?) were built. We decided to go ahead and add a section to the deck and drop the hot tub into the lower part of the back yard. Finally, we created a side access gate for servicing the hot tub. Many homeowners don’t take this potential frustration saving step into consideration.

What were some of the issues you encountered?
The biggest revelation was actually a good surprise that triggered a new design. I believe the amazing results of the beautiful pavers and stonewall created the appetite for redesign. We had a meeting on site, with the owners, that was very productive. We all felt that the new design was going to be a better use of the area with a dramatic increase of open space by using stepping stones and Crab orchard steppers (18″×36″×5-6″ thick) built into the sod, instead of the original planned decking wood stairs that was supposed to connect the upper level with the lower back yard. The homeowner in turn approved the increase of costs for new material and labor.

With hot tub installations, what are some things homeowners need to be
aware of before starting?

Make sure you are in communication with the hot tub supplier. They gave us the specs ahead of time and we had to bring in a new 240v and 110v line from the main breaker box to power up the tub.

Why are you waiting to stain the wood of the pergola?
The entire deck and pergola were made with pressure treated lumber. The wood has to dry for about 4-5 months before it can accept stain.

Are pergolas purely ornamental or do they have a raison d’être?
Pergolas are mainly aesthetic but do provide some shade. Some people add lighting or outdoor speakers. It can be a great place to hang a hammock.

5 Ways to Decide If Your Deck is Dead

5 Ways to Decide If Your Deck is Dead

deck coupon

1)   You feel like you are on a cruise ship in choppy waters when you walk across it.

2)   The wood is so dried up and weathered that guests ask “Where did you get that interesting driftwood art sculpture in your backyard?”

3)   You use a human chain to retrieve stuff from the back of the deck.

4)   You purposely hose down the deck, just in case, on really hot days during a dry spell.

5)   Your deck might be dead if after suggesting drinks on the deck to the neighbors, they suddenly have to go home to check on the dog.

All joking aside, deck maintenance is necessary to prolong the life of your deck. If your deck is on it’s last post, then let Atlanta Curb Appeal give you a quote for a new deck or deck staining! We can sometimes save a deck or a portion of the deck if the damage is minimal. Many times only the top boards of a deck need replacement, while the beams underneath are still in good shape. This typically amounts to considerable savings!

10 Things To Ask Yourself Before A Bathroom Remodel

10 Things to Ask Yourself Before A Bathroom Remodel

1. Keep the same layout or expand? If the work requires a partial or full demolition, it’s a good idea to explore all of your options and possibilities.

2. In the shower, consider adding soap niches and/or a bench.

3. Consider tiling the walls all the way to the ceiling in the shower.

4. What kind of a door do you want for the shower? These days, the majority of our customers choose a frameless glass door (as shown in picture at top).

5. Add some accent tile in the shower walls and floor. You can also tie it to the vanity backsplash for consistency.

6. What style do you want for the new vanities, new mirrors and new light fixtures?

7. Consider backsplash around your bathtub.

8. Replace the bathroom window. Older windows date the room.

9. Make sure you have enough light by the vanities and in the shower. Recessed can lighting is one option.

10. Don’t forget a good quiet venting system.

Kitchen Island and Granite Countertop Installation

New Kitchen Island and Granite Countertop Installation in East Cobb, GA

How did the client find you?

This latest kitchen remodel by Atlanta Curb Appeal is a return client for us. Last year we converted their porch into a screened sun room. They were very pleased with our work and us.

Why did they choose to have their kitchen remodeled?

The client had a small removable island in the kitchen but needed a larger one. They also wanted to shift a few things around. The oven was too far from the prep and sink area and they wanted it to be closer and actually inside the island. We came out to the house again and discussed their needs and functionality of the island. First they wanted to be assured that they had enough space for everything. The client wanted to be confident that this new island and surrounding space would have a natural flow. We outlined the area that it would require and marked it with blue painters tape on the floor. This allowed them to get used to the size of an increased island in the day-to-day use of the kitchen and highlight any potential issues.

How long did the new custom island take?

A few days after marking the floors Atlanta Curb Appeal custom-built and then stained the new kitchen island.  The granite guys came to measure all the countertops plus the island for the new granite. I have a place in Kennesaw that we like to get our granite from for the kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects. I sent the client over to their shop to pick out the slab they liked.

Did you have any challenges?

Moving the range was a big challenge. We had to move a gas line, a 220v outlet and a big fan duct under the floor. Luckily, they have a half finished basement so we were able to access everything from below. We also built a new custom kitchen office desk with one drawer where the range used to be. This closed the gap that was left behind. Kitchen offices are becoming a more popular request.

Did they love the work?

The client is SUPER HAPPY! They love the new kitchen look and the new island space! In fact, after we finished this East Cobb kitchen-remodeling project they asked if we could go ahead and finish part of their basement, which we just completed last week. I can’t wait to share pictures from that next month or on Facebook.

Not One But Four Bathrooms Remodeled in Alpharetta Ga!

Bathroom Renovation Sandy Springs

CLIENT BACKGROUND

(From Avi Moyal, owner of Atlanta Curb Appeal)

The new clients from Alpharetta found me while they did their morning jog in the neighborhood where I was just working on their next door neighbor. They asked me to bid on their 4 bathroom remodel job it was only against 5 other contractors and we ended up being the second lowest quote.”

“We met a few times to go over the project before starting. We discussed in rich detail the materials and the colors.  Both of us agreed upon a start date and a detailed work schedule. During this whole process, the clients and I maintained a high level of communication, which I personally feel is a key part of working with our customers. I think this why we have so many repeat clients, there is a peace of mind knowing exactly what is going on every step of the way (via phone, text, email, videos, pictures or spreadsheets).”

After-Master shower

RENOVATION TIMELINE

This four bathroom remodel took us a total of 3 weeks to complete, from start to finish.

1) Demolition of walls

2) Expanded the shower area in the master

3) Redo all the plumbing for the new shower (because of expanded and wider shower area)

4) New tile on the floors and shower walls

5) New frameless glass shower doors

6) New vanity (done by other carpenter), we did the granite and all the new plumbing

7)New bathroom lighting

8) New ceiling vents

9) New paint

10) Install new mirrors

BATHROOM STYLE DECISIONS

“The clients also decided to go ahead and just get all new faucets and shower sets for the new remodeled master and other bathrooms in the house. She was really hands on and selected all of her mirrors, light fixtures, faucets and even tile collections by herself. Some clients have a good sense of taste and know precisely what they like. While others may need slightly more direction from us or from professional interior decorators.”

After - Master

“They loved the designed floor tile we suggested with the squares (as seen on the photo above). This four bath remodel turned out beautifully.” -Avi Moyal, Owner, Atlanta Curb Appeal

Gorgeous Basement Finishing

Check out this interview with owner Avi Moyal, about one of our recent Basement Finishing remodeling jobs we did in East Cobb/Marietta, GA.

Q. What was the basement like before?

A. It was half finished in the 80’s with just carpets, basic cabinets and paneling. The wood walls made it feel very dark down there. Our goal was to lighten up the area and make it more inviting for entertaining and relaxation.

Q. What were some problems that needed to be addressed?

A. Basement plumbing and electrical re-routing, a huge metal post in the middle of the space. Also there were ceiling vents and pipes which needed to be covered. As in most basements the house cables, vents and pipes were located under the main floors of the home which caused all kind of problems/adventures.

Q. What were some of the unusual details that you guys just love about this place?

A. We did a special staining process on the floors. We stained the concrete with 2 coats of clear epoxy. This unusual technique gave an unique look to the floors and the overall space. It’s beautiful and almost looks like copper.

photo 2 (2)

Also we love the artistic touches such as the hand burned plywood squares on the lower ceiling bridge and the fiercely unique 6×6 sliced log wood puzzle design within the counter top. It was fun to help pick out new lights fixtures and bar chairs for the new space. We added handmade heavy carpets which helped break up the cold floors.

Q. What are some things homeowners should be aware of when taking on a basement remodeling project?

A. That it takes time and it is never what you expect until you start breaking down walls and moving stuff around to only discover that you have to invest more )-; Basement finishing is usually more complicated than people think, mostly because the challenges basements present after you start. Because if you think about it, you are creating something different than what it was originally designed for. However it is totally worth it in the end because of increased living and entertaining square footage.

Q. What are some things that people say when they see your new basement?

A. WOW! they are absolutely loving it. I think the combination of colors and the small touches of craftsmanship has made it very unique. We have already had our daughter’s 7 years old birthday party down there as well as an adults party and other gatherings in the new basement space…We are very pleased with the results and the fact that we are actually getting good use out of this investment to our home.
